'Buffon should have smashed Lewandowski's face in' - Tacconia - The ex-Bianconeri shot-stopper has been critical of his iconic countryman, insisting things would have gone much differently in his own playing days.

Former Juventus goalkeeper Stefano Tacconi feels that Gianluigi Buffon should have "smashed" Robert Lewandowski before the Bayern Munich striker had the chance to spark a Champions League comeback on Wednesday.

The Serie A side had taken something of a shock lead in the second leg, leading 2-0 (4-2 on aggregate) as the game entered the final stages.

However, Lewandowski crept in at the back post to open the home side's account after 73 minutes in what would eventually end in a 4-2 victory for the Bundesliga champions after extra time.

"Buffon should have come out earlier on Lewandowski, smashed his face in and ensure he didn't get the chance to finish." Tacconi told Radio Kiss Kiss.

"I would have smashed everything from his cheekbones to his knees, but goalkeepers aren't like they used to be in my day. It's all different now - we used to come sprinting out."

Though many fans of Italy's number one would take a different view - especially in light of Buffon's recent clean sheet record having many hailing him as the best goalkeeper of all time - the veteran is now 38 and nearing the end of his career.

Asked to comment on the Azzurri's future prospects, Tacconi was unequivocal.

"Gianluigi Donnarumma [has the brightest future], without a doubt," he said. "For all he's doing at Milan, he deserves a place at Euro 2016. I'd let him be the third choice goalkeeper and breathe in the atmosphere of a major tournament.
