Bayer Leverkusen and Turkey star Hakan Calhanaglu is being investigated by Fifa over alleged contract irregularities and could face a ban from Euro 2016.
The 22-year-old Turkey international joined Leverkusen in 2014, after spells at Karlsruher and Hamburg.
But sources close to the investigation confirmed to Goal that the charges are related to a payment he received back in 2011 to sign for Turkish side Trabzonspor, a deal which he later rejected.
His current employers also confirmed the allegations against Calhanoglu date back to before his move to Bayer, although they gave few details.
"There is an ongoing investigation between the player Hakan Calhanoglu and FIFA, which deals with the time before he joined Bayer Leverkusen. It seems that there have been irregularities in the player's contract," spokesman Dirk Mesch told SID.
"This is an ongoing investigation, where we will have to gain more information before we can talk about it in more detail."
If the world governing body hands out a ban, the player would be in danger of missing out on Euro 2016 as part of the Turkey squad.
