Former Southampton youngster broke two leg defeat of PSV Eindhoven 2-1 in the inaugural match of the Champions League group phase and consequently the middle of last week, he should be absent for long periods.
"I am very sad for him and for Manchester United," said the former Liverpool and England defender told Sky Sports.
"You think how good he performed this season, he probably United's player alongside Chris Smalling in the early weeks.
"He may be truly united in the left back position and with England ahead of the European Cup, like Ashley Cole in the last decade.
Carragher also hope players born July 12, 1995 can get up and perform in the finals of the European Cup in France next year.
"Hopefully he can come back for United before the end of the season and penetrate the Euro, but this could be a long journey to recover.
"In the next few weeks he should forget the disappointment and work to return because he has shown how good he was. I think when we will see Shaw back we saw in the last three-four months, "said Carragher.
