Schmeichel: Man Utd won't win the league playing the Van Gaal way - Manchester United great Peter Schmeichel does not believe the team can win the title given the way they are playing under Louis van Gaal.

Wayne Rooney's goal helped the Old Trafford outfit seal a stuttering 1-0 win at Liverpool on Saturday which moved them within seven points of leaders Arsenal.

The result prompted Van Gaal to declare his side can still win their first Premier League crown since 2013.

However, Schmeichel does not believe the team are good enough to continue grinding out results, labelling the win lucky and attributing the struggles to the team's style under the Dutchman.

"I don't think they can win the title. I don't think the team's good enough," the former goalkeeper told Sky Sports. "I don't think the team enjoy playing the way they play.

"Today was very much three lucky points. I think David de Gea played exceptionally well. He was key in keeping Manchester United in the game.

"When you have a world-class player like Wayne Rooney of course something can happen in the last third. And it did.

"He's [Van Gaal] very keen on telling us that they've done the thing they trained [to do]. So praising himself. What they've discussed, meaning 'what I told them to do'.
