Elimination-style F1 qualifying set for approval

Elimination-style F1 qualifying set for approval -  A new live elimination-style qualifying format could be introduced to Formula 1 after teams came to an agreement as part of plans to improve the show.

Key figures in the sport met in Geneva today to discuss a number of topics aimed at establishing the future direction of F1, with a qualifying shake-up emerging as the most radical change tabled.

According to FIA sources, it is understood teams are keen to introduce a live elimination-style format, which will see the slowest car forced out every 1.5 minutes.

Set to take place amidst the existing three qualifying phases, it is hoped this format will ensure the competition remains intense throughout the session.

In addition, a finalising of the 2017 bodywork was discussed, along with movement on power unit supply and cockpit protection, with more official information set to be communicated tomorrow.

Any agreements made are still subject to being passed by the World Motor Sport Council.
