Napoli absolutely dominated Inter in a 3-0 triumph, including Piotr Zielinski and Marek Hamsik goals in the first six minutes.

The Partenopei were forced to use Manolo Gabbiadini as their centre-forward, because Arkadiusz Milik was still injured and Dries Mertens suspended, but Elseid Hysaj shook off a knock to start. The Nerazzurri were fresh from their first win under Stefano Pioli, who beat Fiorentina 4-2 on Monday evening, and fielded the same XI.

Inter haven’t conquered the San Paolo in Serie A since another 2-0 result in October 1997, managing only three draws and seven defeats.

Napoli took the lead within two minutes with a wonderful team move, finalised by Jose Callejon knocking down a Marek Hamsik chipped pass for Piotr Zielinski, who kept the volley low from 12 yards into the far bottom corner.

Moments later it was 2-0, as Hamsik sprung the offside trap and placed his angled drive past Samir Handanovic to leave Inter reeling in the opening six minutes. It was an historic goal, because on 104 it put Hamsik third in the all-time Napoli scorers’ charts level with Edinson Cavani.

There was almost a third, Handanovic beating away a Gabbiadini strike and the ex-Sampdoria forward’s glancing header just wide. Inter were almost gifted a way back in by Raul Albiol’s poor back-pass sending Mauro Icardi clear, but Pepe Reina rushed off his line to block with his legs.

Ever Banega’s through ball released Icardi, but he tried to roll across for Ivan Perisic rather than go for goal and the chance went begging. Moments later the Argentine forward did take it himself and was denied by Reina at the near post.

Handanovic beat away a Gabbiadini snapshot on the counter and Hamsik’s ferocious strike from the edge of the box. Ever Banega went down with a knee injury, but carried on until he could make way for Eder at half-time. Cristian Ansaldi was booked and will be suspended against his old club Genoa.

Inter started aggressively after the break, Ivan Perisic curling just wide, but Andrea Ranocchia intercepted Callejon’s pass before Hamsik could tap in from six yards and Handanovic palmed a Faouzi Ghoulam cross-shot over the bar.

After a series of corners, Handanovic flapped one away from Raul Albiol, but Insigne reacted quicker than anyone on the loose ball to volley in from 12 yards for Napoli’s third. The Inter defence was utterly static.

Insigne rolled across for Hamsik, forcing Handanovic into a save from point-blank range, but Reina denied Antonio Candreva a consolation goal with a fantastic one-handed save on his low strike from 12 yards.

Maurizio Sarri finally gave summer signing Marko Rog his debut in a Napoli jersey and he was greeted to great acclaim by the San Paolo crowd.

Gabbiadini at full stretch couldn’t steer the volley on target, but in the final minute Perisic’s free header across the face of goal was wide from six yards.
