The highly-rated Belgian had been facing a season on the F1 sidelines as the reserve driver for the McLaren-Honda team, but the news that Alonso failed his pre-Bahrain medical in the wake of his monster shunt in Australia has paved the way for Vandoorne to make his first race appearance.
Vandoorne's promotion comes after he produced a record-breaking season en route to the 2015 GP2 Series title – clinching seven race wins and 15 podiums -, while he has signed up to compete in the Japanese Super Formula series.
