Scholes: THIS is the Rooney we love -  Manchester United icon Paul Scholes has heaped praise on club skipper Wayne Rooney as he netted twice in the the Red Devils' 3-3 draw with Newcastle on Tuesday.

The captain opened the scoring at St. James' Park before his clever pass set Jesse Lingard up to add a second, but United were forced to fight back for the lead after goals from Georginio Wijnaldum and Aleksandar Mitrovic restored parity.

Rooney then found the net in the last ten minutes with what looked to be the winner, but a late strike from Paul Dummett ensured a share of the spoils for the hosts in a 3-3 draw.

Regardless, Scholes feels Rooney's display shows that he is returning to his brilliant best after having been criticised for most of the season.

"Everything he did was brilliant," he told BT Sport.

"That second goal was sensational. He's been on the brink of looking like the Wayne Rooney of old in the last two or three weeks.
